Iceland: Land of Elves, Sagas & Volcanoes

Planning a trip to Iceland offers a unique and unforgettable experience, filled with stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and a wealth of outdoor activities.

Here's an overview to help you organize your thoughts on what you want to experience in this enchanting Nordic island:

1. Choosing the Right Time to Visit:
  • Iceland's weather can be unpredictable, but the summer months (June to August) are generally milder with longer days.

  • In summer months, the sun is up almost 24 hours. You will NOT see Northern Lights in the summer but you can experience a lot of outdoor activities due to the milder temperatures and long days.

  • Fall and Winter (October to February) is ideal for witnessing the Northern Lights.

2. Getting There:

  • Reykjavik, the capital, is the primary gateway. Keflavik International Airport is the main international airport.

  • Icelandair flies nonstop, direct from RDU to KEF.

3. Accommodation:

  • Reykjavik offers a range of hotels, guesthouses, and hostels. Outside the city, you can find unique accommodations like farm stays and cozy cottages. These may be somewhat simple or rustic in style.

  • The best hotels in Reykjavik are in the 4 star category.

  • You can stay in Reykjavik and take excursions to visit many sights. Or, plan a longer trip with stays in other areas. These need careful planning due to the rural nature of Iceland.

4. Transportation:

  • Renting a car is a popular choice to explore Iceland's scenic routes and remote areas.

  • Public transportation is available, especially in Reykjavik, but a car provides flexibility.

5. Must-Visit Attractions:

  • Golden Circle: A route that includes Þingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall.

  • Blue Lagoon: A geothermal spa with mineral-rich waters.

  • Vatnajökull National Park: Home to Europe's largest national park and Vatnajökull Glacier.

  • You may want to plan a visit to the Western fjords or to Akureyri in the north. We can discuss your options in our Discovery Call.

6. Outdoor Activities:

  • Hiking: Explore various trails, including those in Skaftafell and Landmannalaugar.

  • Glacier Tours: Experience ice caves and glacier hiking.

  • Whale Watching: Husavik is a popular spot for whale watching tours.

7. Cultural Experiences:

  • Reykjavik: Visit the Hallgrímskirkja Church, Harpa Concert Hall, and the vibrant streets filled with cafes and shops.

  • Local Cuisine: Try Icelandic delicacies like fermented shark, lamb, and skyr (yogurt).

8. Northern Lights Viewing:

  • For a chance to see the Northern Lights, head to remote locations away from city lights during winter. We can plan excursions for Northern Lights viewing from Reykjavik.

9. Safety and Precautions:

  • Be aware of weather conditions and road closures, especially in winter.

  • Respect nature and follow safety guidelines for activities like hiking and glacier exploration.

10. Currency and Language:

  • The Icelandic Króna (ISK) is the currency.

  • I advise withdrawing local currency from an ATM at the airport.

  • English is widely spoken, making communication easy for travelers.

Iceland's breathtaking landscapes, unique culture, and friendly locals make it a fantastic destination for travelers seeking an extraordinary adventure. Tailoring itineraries to match the diverse interests of your clients will ensure a personalized and memorable experience.

How many days do I need to see Iceland?

Planning how many days for your trip entails first, deciding what you want to see and do there. Are you going to drive the Ring Road? You need at least 10 days. Will you make a home base in Reykjavik and plan day trips to visit sights? You need 5 days. Do you plan to rent a car and drive to at least one other destination? Plan for 5-7 days.

What kinds of sights and activities will I experience in Iceland?

Iceland is an outdoorsy destination with natural beauty everywhere you look. The city centre of Reykjavik is relatively compact and walkable with shops, cafes and several interesting museums plus the iconic church that rises above the city. Outside the city, you are surrounded by breathtaking beauty. Waterfalls abound throughout the country - so be prepared to get wet. Hiking, ice cave exploring, Icelandic horseback riding are all on the docket for your visit.

What budget do I need for a trip to Iceland?

Your budget depends on what type of travel and activity you have in mind. For a one week trip with planned excursions from Reykjavik, I recommend planning for $2500-3000 per person with air transportation. An Expedition Cruise aboard a luxury ship equipped with Zodiac ships, hiking equipment etc, you should plan for about $6000 per person for a 9-10 day experience that includes all of your accommodations and dining.
