As I woke up in Heidelberg this morning, the weather seemed to reflect the season—cold and brimming with the promise of winter rain or even sleet. Despite the chilly conditions, I was filled with anticipation for the day’s adventure: hiking Heidelberg’s famed Philosopher’s Path.
Some of my friends tried to persuade me to skip the hike due to the weather, but I couldn’t resist the allure of this historic trail. Bundled up in my waterproof booties (though, in hindsight, real hiking boots would have been a better choice), I set out with our guide and two other guests. My fellow hikers, clad in serious trekking gear and clearly seasoned adventurers, were inspiring company.
Our journey began near Heidelberg Castle, its ruins towering majestically over the city. After crossing a picturesque bridge and ascending a steep slope, we reached the Philosopher’s Path. The trail lived up to its reputation, offering stunning views of the Neckar River, the old town, and the surrounding hills. The crisp air and informal camaraderie of our small group made the experience even more enjoyable. Despite the steep, cobblestoned sections, I relished every step, feeling invigorated by the hike and the beauty of the landscape.
After descending back into town, I rewarded myself with an incredible German beer, shared with a friend at a cozy local spot. It was the perfect way to warm up and soak in Heidelberg’s charm before boarding the bus back to the AmaMora for Cocktail Hour and our Port Talk.
Our Cruise Director had some exciting news for us this evening! We were expecting a special visitor onboard - that is, if we had been well-behaved over the past year. Everyone was to leave one slipper (these are provided in our cabins) outside our doors when we went to bed in hopes of receiving a sweet surprise. Stay tuned!!
The evening onboard was equally unforgettable. We were treated to a special Chaine des Rotisseurs Dinner, a prestigious dining experience that highlights AmaWaterways' exceptional culinary standards. La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, an internationally renowned gastronomic society, extends its membership only to those who demonstrate world-class culinary excellence. AmaWaterways, under the leadership of President Rudi Schreiner, was the first cruise line to receive this honor.
Tonight’s menu was a masterpiece, featuring regionally inspired dishes that paired beautifully with wines hand-selected for the occasion. Each course was a testament to the skill and artistry of the chefs, a perfect conclusion to a day filled with both adventure and indulgence. My meal started with a Salad Niçoise Nouveau. We enjoyed a gorgeous palate cleanser of Kir Royal sorbet. For my main, I enjoyed a succulent dish of Mustard Crusted Lamb Racks with Rosemary Sauce, Artichole Puree and Potato Gratin. The Crepe Suzette for dessert was served with an outstanding Cinnamon Ice Cream. I am still thinking about that meal!
Day 5 of this Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps journey was a blend of physical challenge, cultural exploration, and gastronomic delight—a memory I’ll treasure long after the cruise ends.
