Day 6: A Visit to Strasbourg on our magical Christmas Markets river cruise

Updated: Dec 9

Embarking on an AmaWaterways river cruise is always a treat, but experiencing the Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps itinerary during the Taste of Christmas Markets is pure magic. Our journey aboard the elegant AmaMora was filled with holiday cheer, cultural exploration, and unforgettable memories.

A Sunny Start in Strasbourg

We arrived in Strasbourg to a picture-perfect day, with blue skies highlighting the city’s charm. Strasbourg, nestled in the Alsace region, is a unique blend of German and French influences, and this was evident everywhere we looked.

For our excursion, we chose the Active level walking tour offered by AmaWaterways. This thoughtfully designed program caters to various activity levels—Gentle, Regular, and Active—ensuring all guests have an enriching experience.

Our tour began at the Orangerie, a breathtaking park bursting with late fall flowers. Vibrant chrysanthemums, ornamental kale, and cheerful pansies provided a pop of color, while enormous stork nests atop the trees reminded us of the city’s beloved mascot. As our guide shared the stork’s symbolic connection to Strasbourg, we took in the sights of rowers gliding past the Council of Europe and the European Parliament buildings.

The city’s half-timbered houses and faux limestone facades showcased its rich cultural blend, a hallmark of the Alsace region. Though the famed Christmas markets hadn’t yet opened, the city was already dressed for the season, with twinkling lights and festive storefront displays hinting at the magic to come.

A Sweet Afternoon Onboard

After returning to the AmaMora, we were greeted with the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked gingerbread cookies. The onboard pastry chef had prepared everything for a delightful afternoon of cookie decorating! It was a whimsical moment of creativity and camaraderie as we adorned our gingerbread with colorful icing and sprinkles—fitting all the cozy holiday traditions into one extraordinary week.

Evening Festivities and a Surprise Visit

The festive spirit carried into the evening as we gathered in the lounge after a delicious dinner. The crew treated us to a lively carol-singing session, filling the room with joy and laughter. Then came the surprise of the evening: a visit from none other than Santa Claus himself! As he made his rounds, each guest received a small, thoughtful gift—a heartwarming gesture that encapsulated the cruise’s festive spirit.

An Unforgettable Holiday Experience

This journey aboard the AmaMora wasn’t just a cruise; it was a celebration of the season, blending culture, tradition, and the magic of the holidays. From Strasbourg’s charming streets to the festive onboard activities, every moment felt like a scene from a holiday movie.

If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate the season, AmaWaterways’ Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps: Taste of Christmas Markets itinerary offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with charm, cheer, and plenty of holiday spirit.

And, there is just one more day left in our incredible journey down the Rhine River. Sad that it's coming to an end, but so happy to have had the experience.
