As we woke to our final full day aboard the AmaMora, a bittersweet feeling settled in. The week had flown by, and every moment had been filled with unforgettable experiences. Day 7 was no exception as we explored the unique crossroads of three countries and one of Switzerland’s most picturesque cities.
Morning: A Three-Country Bike Adventure
After a hearty breakfast on board, we geared up for an invigorating bike ride to explore the tri-border area where Switzerland, France, and Germany meet. Despite the chill in the air, the pedaling soon warmed us as we rode along scenic paths through this fascinating region.
Our guide shared insights about daily life here, where residents seamlessly navigate three sets of laws, languages, and currencies. It’s a cultural blend that fosters cooperation and a shared identity while still celebrating the uniqueness of each country. From charming French towns to well-kept Swiss streets and bustling German markets, the ride was a tapestry of traditions and lifestyles.
Lunchtime on the AmaMora
Back on board in time for lunch, we were welcomed by the comforting warmth of the ship. The dining team once again outdid themselves, offering a delicious meal that gave us the energy to prepare for the next adventure.
Afternoon: Exploring Lucerne
In the afternoon, we set off on an excursion to Lucerne, one of Switzerland’s most enchanting cities and a personal highlight of the trip. Surrounded by the majestic Alps and perched on the edge of its namesake lake, Lucerne feels like stepping into a postcard.
From the iconic Chapel Bridge with its historic tower to the serene beauty of Lake Lucerne, every corner of this city captivated us. The snow-capped mountains provided a stunning backdrop as we strolled through cobblestone streets, soaking in the charm of the old town. It was easy to see why this destination is beloved by so many, and I’m already dreaming of a return visit to explore it further.
Some of our fellow travelers opted to spend their entire day in Lucerne, while others stayed in Basel to uncover its unique treasures. No matter the choice, everyone returned to the AmaMora with stories to tell and memories to cherish.
Evening: Farewell Dinner
Our final evening aboard began with a festive cocktail hour, where I sipped the Lemon Drop Martini – the Drink of the Day. It was the perfect start to a celebratory farewell dinner, featuring the exceptional cuisine we’d come to expect from AmaWaterways. The dining room buzzed with camaraderie as we reflected on the highlights of the cruise, reluctant to say goodbye to new friends and the impeccable staff who had made our journey so special.
Back in our cabin, we packed our bags, the reality sinking in that our magical week on the Rhine was coming to an end.
Day 8: Departure
The next morning, after a final breakfast on board, we said farewell to the AmaMora. Our Cruise Director had expertly arranged a taxi to take us to the train station in Basel, where we caught a train to the Zurich airport. The Swiss rail system was as efficient and comfortable as promised, a smooth end to our incredible journey.
As we boarded our flight home, we carried with us not only souvenirs but also countless memories of castles, Christmas markets, and the warm spirit of the holiday season. The AmaWaterways Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps cruise had exceeded every expectation, and I look forward to my planned Christmas Markets on the Rhine cruise in 2025 and Iconic Christmas Markets River Cruise (on the Danube) in 2026!
