Finding the Best Way to Explore Europe: Escorted Group Travel vs Independent Touring

Updated: May 9

As a seasoned travel agent who plans a lot of travel abroad, I am often asked about the pros and cons of escorted group travel contrasted with independent touring, particularly in Europe. Both travel styles have their respective allure and charm, but strikingly differ in their approach.

Escorted group travel is a packaged deal, often part of an organized tour by a reputable travel company such as Adventures by Disney® or Trafalgar. These tours come with a defined itinerary, professional tour guides, and the companionship of fellow travelers. Many travelers cherish the security, camaraderie, and hassle-free organization that escorted tours guarantee.

Thinking back to some of my favorite vacations, my escorted trip to Italy with Adventures by Disney stands out. What draws me back to this memory isn't just Italy's rich history or gorgeous architecture and priceless art - and, of course, the FOOD! But we also experienced some exclusive access that we never would have gotten without ABD: unlocking and opening the Vatican Museum or being alone with the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London before other tourists have access stand out in my travel memories.

On the other hand, independent touring offers a level of freedom and flexibility you won't get with an escorted group travel. As an independent traveler, you can choose your own adventure. Go ahead and meander through ancient lanes of Paris or Rome at your own pace, and delve deep into European culture unhurriedly. This type of traveling necessitates more advance planning but creates room for individual exploration and surprise adventures. The autonomy can be exciting for many; you control your journey, the sites you’d like to visit, the food you wish to savor, and the rhythm at which you travel.

Independent touring can be particularly enticing for culture and history enthusiasts looking to learn about Europe's historical sites and museums without the constraints of a prearranged schedule.

The key to selecting between escorted travel and independent touring lies in understanding your travel preferences and what you seek from the journey. If a stress-free, organized, and sociable experience is your calling, an escorted group tour might be the right choice. However, if the idea of designing your own adventure, immersing yourself fully in a new culture, and being flexible with your schedule thrills you, then independent touring it is!

In the end, whether you are drawn to the Tuscan countryside, or hiking Iceland's volcanic landscapes or exploring Parisian sites, Trips by Mary is well-equipped to ensure your travel needs are met with unparalleled dedication and expertise.
