Incredible as it seems, the David has stood the test of time as one of the greatest sculptures ever created. Anyone can buy a ticket to the Accademia and walk through the gallery to see the David, of course. And the museum is filled with visitors - some with an audio tour and others just on their own.
As guests of Adventures by Disney, we were treated to an eye opening tour with our Florence guide. It was with the context provided by our guide that we saw The David with new eyes and appreciated his vulnerability as he looks down to the side, unsure of himself. Even if you're not a museum or art nerd, I think you would also be in awe when in the presence of this magnificent sculpture.
Following our time in the Accademia, we walked through Florence to an exclusive experience at a renowned leather and gold merchant. These are two of the premium products that Florence is famous for and you want to set aside room in your bags to bring home some of these treasures. We learned what to look for in leather goods, tried on some beautiful jackets and bags. The merchants showed us some stunning gold pieces as well. And, when you see them in person, it's easy to understand the quality. This shop invented a famous bag that Grace Kelly made famous.
We spent some time selecting our treasures to bring home. My daughters each chose something special My eldest got a gold chain made in a way that makes it sparkle, along with a Florentine coin pendant. And, my younger daughter picked out an elegant navy leather jacket. I had to have a Kelly bag - couldn't pass it up!
After we finished shopping, our Guides had told us where we could get an amazing lunch. Even though it was very hot, my family ordered lasagna, a specialty. Let me tell you - it was FANTASTIC! We also ordered limoncello spritzes because... HOT!
Our Guides gave us the option of touring the Duomo. This tour was fascinating for the secret passageways, spy holes and art. We could have stayed late into the evening in Florence, but we were ready to head back to the hotel.
That evening, we threw open the windows in our rooms and enjoyed the Tuscan breeze and some limoncello.
